If you want to say something but you cannot find words to do it, images will help you. Images have power to show what you want to say. However, there is a danger to get lost and send your audience absolutely different message. Thereby, to deliver the desirable message requires skills as well as effective and persuasive writing does. I think that the Flickr gallery follows this concept by trying to gather different people in order to share with their ideas through photography. I chose only two galleries “All the mini horses….” by Carie and “Hermosos caballos” by CYGARARI. I think that the galleries effectively supplement each other and send a very important message of our attitude about horses and their role in the past and now. I think that both curators claim that horses are our friends and they should be free and loved. To understand why I think so we should look at visual evidence.
The gallery “All the mini horses….” shows pictures of mini horses tied up to horse rings at the streets of an industrialized city. I think that the curator’s decision is made to remind us about the role of horses in the past and people’s attitude towards them. The evidence is horse rings attached to asphalt sidewalks, and a horseman which could symbolize past times of severe horses’ captivity and the use of horses for daily transportation and for wars. Additionally, modern cars and houses on the pictures may symbolize technological progress and change of the horses’ role in people’s lives.
The change of horses’ role in people’s lives is more visible when we compare two galleries. I think the curator of the gallery “All the mini horses….” makes a decision to use toys instead of real horses in order to demonstrate people’s attitude towards them. The curator allegedly says that many people treat horses as their toys, transportation, or property. However, horses are also living beings which may feel and die. Therefore, we can see in a few of the pictures mini horses died. At these pictures the curator used gloomy colors such as grey, grey-blue, and lusterless red to emphasize emotions and mood of agitation, loneliness, and defenselessness of horses among the audience. However, if we look more attentively to details, we can see rebellion of other horses which are shown reared up or trying to break away, but it is difficult to do because of the horse rings. I think the rebellion is also a sign of possible change of the horses’ role in people’s lives. This change is nicely visible at the gallery “Hermosos caballos”. To demonstrate the change of attitude to horses CYGARARI made a purposeful decision to show us happy running horses at wonderful landscapes, horses in some clothes made by people, and a touching scene of a woman who is flattering her horse. To stress these emotions the curator uses bright colors such as green, light blue, yellow, white, and brown. All of this evidence emphasizes that the horses’ role now is mostly being friends. Additionally, one of the curators shows the picture and says, “…horses like to play, too” which could mean that we should understand that horses are not our toys anymore, but our friends who may have feelings and live free and colorful life as people do. However, if we look at the pictures one more time we can notice that both galleries still show horses which are bridled. Maybe we should think whether people now create a new illusion of friendship? To understand whether it is true or not we should look at details and think diligently.
Even though we see the positive changes of horses’ roles and people’s attitude toward them, we still can see at the pictures horses which are put on harness. However, I think that the meaning of captivity in both galleries is different because of changed attitude to horses. At the first gallery captivity plays the role of a killer, but the second gallery demonstrates limited captivity as care and relative freedom. Even though both galleries don’t show those who tied those horses up, the reasons for the horses’ captivity, and who cares for horses, I think that it is stated implicitly in the pictures. In addition, it gives freedom for the target audience who are people that love horses and animals in general and are defenders of animals’ rights.
Because horses are people’s legal property people should treat them accordingly with care and compassion. Thereby, I suppose that one of the goals of the curators is to inspire the target audience to love and treat horses like friends and remember the past. I think that this goal might be heard because the galleries are effective and persuasive for those who really love animals and are open minded. For me personally these galleries are effective and persuasive enough because they reminded me my childhood and my trip to the mountains in order to ride horses. It was so exciting. My horse was very calm. When I was riding it, I understood that to do this I need to feel some invisible connection between a horse and me. It is weird, but it is the way it works. It is the same as the real friendship because when your friend understands you and you understand your friend, things are going well and both are happy. Consequently, it is important to treat horses like our friends, otherwise both sides could suffer.
Finally, even though there are not many horses used for transportation nowadays the horse rings are still there. It implicitly reminds us about the history of relationships between people and horses. What we can do is change our attitude about horses and treat them like friends who are free and loved, but not like toys or transportation. Thereby, analyzing the galleries I can make a conclusion that they are touching, effective, and persuasive for the audience who really loves animals and who are open minded.
